CNRS School INTERFACE on modelling and design of bio-electronic interface for chronic implants

This school contributes to federate of a community in bioelectronics, by showing researchers the full spectrum of technologies related to the discipline and its highly multidisciplinary character. Bioelectronics designs, produces and implements devices at the interface of electronics and the biological environment. It is the first link between the living and the electronic. Bioelectronics makes it possible to monitor living phenomena in real time and/or to continuously reproduce biological events in situ. It is a highly disciplinary field and calls upon several disciplinary fields and scientific communities (biology, materials, adaptable microelectronics, electronic systems, flexible architectures, information processing). These devices need to be adapted to the targeted applications (in-vitro in-vivo) as well as to the types of cells and biological and physiological phenomena involved. Some examples are: phenotype differentiation, cancer or cell evolution, recording of electrical activities of cells (cardiomyocyte, neurons, etc.) or reproduction of model structures to study a healthy or pathological target physiological structure. The design and manufacture of these devices rely on the skills of expert technologists and are potentially transferable to industry, but their practical application remains a challenge. This summer school aims to give the keys to these technologies to researchers from other disciplines to enable them to better understand these technological solutions for their research and technological development. Thus, the main objective of this training will be to introduce and apply different techniques in bioelectronics, from heterogeneous modelling of the interface, to the objectification of measured data in a given application context (cardiology or neuroscience), via the microelectronic design of the interface.
This training will allow to apprehend :
1. The methods of dimensioning and modelling of microsystems and bioelectronic instrumentation, the methods of designing in vitro experimental protocols.
2. Tools for electronic design and simulation, analysis of biological signals.
3. Clean room manufacturing and micro technologies dedicated to bio-interfaces.
